Changelog of the ICOT Archives
This page lists the changes made to the ICOT (Fifth Generation Computer
Project) part of the archive between the original archive DVD (2005) and the
version published at
www.uedalab.jp/AITEC_ICOT_ARCHIVES.
The DVD content was copied to this site in 2016–2018. The work below was done
from 18 to 30 September 2026 with the help of Claude (an AI assistant), at the
request of the site maintainer. Entries are in chronological order (dates in
JST); paths are relative to the ICOT/ folder. Changes to the AITEC
part are listed in the AITEC changelog.
1. Character-encoding declarations — 2026-09-18
Defects
- 2,518 HTML files did not declare their character encoding, so current browsers could display their Japanese text as garbage (mojibake).
- One file declared an invalid encoding label (
x-euc). - One link differed from its target file name only in letter case, which matters on a case-sensitive web server.
Changes
- An encoding declaration
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=…">was added to each undeclared file, with the encoding determined from the bytes and from sibling pages:iso-2022-jp(2,412 files),EUC-JP(54, LaTeX2HTML output) andShift_JIS(52). Where a page had no<head>(or no<html>), a minimal wrapper was added around the declaration; bare fragments got the declaration as their first line. The page content itself was not changed. Museum/FUNDING/98/catalogue01-E.html:x-euc→iso-2022-jp.Museum/FUNDING/97/catalogue08-E.html: letter case of a link corrected.
Files modified: 2,520.
2. TR/TM report pages and TR/TM search — 2026-09-19
Defect
Clicking a Technical Report (TR) or Technical Memorandum (TM) in the lists opened an empty “Contents of Report” page, and the TR/TM keyword search did nothing. These pages depended on an ActiveX control and data binding that only Internet Explorer supported.
Changes
The four pages were rewritten to read the existing .idx data files
with standard JavaScript and to decode them as Shift_JIS. The contents page also
gained a direct link to the report’s PDF. Data files, PDFs and lists were not
changed.
Files modified: Museum/TRTM/TR/TRindex.html,
Museum/TRTM/TM/TMindex.html, Museum/TRTM/searcher-E.html,
Museum/TRTM/searcher-J.html (the two index pages were replaced
again in entry 5).
3. Non-standard characters — 2026-09-19/20
Museum/TRTM/TR/TRlist.html,Museum/TRTM/TM/TMlist.html: Roman numerals encoded as vendor-specific characters, which current browsers cannot display, → ASCII I, II, III.Museum/TODAY/icot-today02–08.html: a non-standard code (0x2323) used as spacing → ideographic space (1,656 occurrences).Museum/IFS/abst/054-J.html: a duplicated Roman numeral after “HELIC-II” removed.Museum/SOFTWARE/LEGAL/ronri-j.html: an unknown code in a case citation →-(“高刑6-7-859”), inferred from the neighbouring citations.
After these changes, every HTML page decodes cleanly in its declared encoding (a few pages use half-width katakana and NEC symbols, which browsers display correctly).
Files modified: 11.
4. Archive top page — 2026-09-28
Defect
The two entry buttons of the archive top page shared with AITEC
(../index.html, inherited from the DVD’s start page) were table cells
with JavaScript onclick handlers only, which search engines do not
follow.
Change
The button texts were wrapped in ordinary links to HomePage-J.html
and ../AITEC/aitec.html; the click behaviour is unchanged.
5. Search-engine visibility of TR/TM, and link fixes — 2026-09-29
Defects
- The contents pages of all 2,203 reports were a single JavaScript page
(
TRindex.html?TRNAME=…,TMindex.html?TMNAME=…) whose text appeared only after scripts ran, so search engines could not index them, and the PDFs were reachable only through script-generated links. The site had no sitemap. HomePage.htmllinked the FGCS’92 demonstration documents to a bare directory (a server file listing instead of the contents page), and the Japanese edition (Museum/FGCS92Demo/J/) was not linked from anywhere.- A page of the laboratory site linked to copies of contest pages on jipdec.or.jp that no longer exist.
Changes
- One static page per report was generated from the
.idxdata:Museum/TRTM/TR/tr0001.html–tr0911.html(898 pages) andMuseum/TRTM/TM/tm0001.html–tm1322.html(1,305 pages), each with its own title, the report data, the table of contents linked to PDF pages, and a PDF link. In these pages, the header fields of seven reports whose data lacked a line were realigned, and the labels “Auther”/“belogs” were spelled “Author”/“belongs”. TRlist.htmlandTMlist.htmlnow link to these pages.TRindex.htmlandTMindex.htmlbecame small redirect pages, and new.htaccessfiles inTR/andTM/redirect the old URLs, so old links keep working.searcher-E.html,searcher-J.html: result links go to the new pages (TR-822 and TR-900, which have no page, link to their PDFs).HomePage.html: the FGCS’92 demonstrations link now points toMuseum/FGCS92Demo/E/HomePage.html.Museum/FGCS/FGCS.html: links added to the HTML edition (Japanese and English) of the FGCS’92 demonstration documents.- Outside the archive: a sitemap for the report pages, the lists and the PDFs was added to the site, and the dead jipdec.or.jp links were pointed to the copies in this archive.
Files modified or added: 2,213.
6. This changelog, language links, and removal of links to private material — 2026-09-30
- This changelog was added (
changelog-E.html,changelog-J.html), with links to it at the bottom ofHomePage.htmlandHomePage-J.html. - The section “4) ICOT OB限定資料” (materials for former ICOT members only: a
member list and videos of symposia and farewell parties) was removed from
HomePage-J.html, together with the pageMuseum/OBlibrary.htmlthat listed the videos. This material is private and was never part of the web archive, so the links led nowhere. - The English front page
HomePage.html(“FGCS Museum”) was not linked from the archive top page or fromHomePage-J.html. Links were added: “FGCS Museum (English)” under the ICOT button of the archive top page (../index.html), “English” at the top ofHomePage-J.html, and “日本語” at the top ofHomePage.htmlback toHomePage-J.html.
Known remaining issue
The slides Museum/FGCS-OHP/FGCS-OHP-latest.htm and
FGCS-OHP-latest-E.htm were saved with PowerPoint’s “Save as Web
Page” for Internet Explorer and work only partly in current browsers. They are
left as they are.
